Announcements

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

This is your year.  You can make a difference in your life and together with Weight Watchers and our meeting teams, you will be successful and live healthier and be at your goal weight.  There is no better time than NOW!  I can’t wait to see everyone, new and old acquaintances and let’s get ready to have some fun!

Be Mindful

The NEW Beyond the Scale program is here!  I have to say I don’t even think of the new program a program.  It is a comprehensive way of living life, healthy and happier!  This plan focuses on food and fitness, using SmartPoints and FitPoints, and is supported by an emphasis on being good to yourself to help you live more healthfully and happily.  You’re not just a part of Weight Watchers to lose weight. You’ve joined this community to get healthier and live a life more aligned with your dreams. You deserve a program that helps you accomplish just that. That’s why we’re going Beyond the Scale!  There are 3 pillars of the program and all three are equally important:

Food, Fitness and Mindset

This is the year of you achieving your health and weight goals!  Have a great week and see you in the meeting room.

WeightwatchersWhat if losing weight was more than just a number on the scale?

A Closer Look at SmartPoints

We know calories don’t tell the whole story when it comes to what we eat. We can eat the same amount of calories in Snickers bars and apples, but the nutrients we get from those apples help us to stay healthy. SmartPoints uses calories as a baseline. Saturated fat and added sugar will add to the SmartPoints value and protein will lower it. This is based on the latest nutritional science. I’ve been living SmartPoints for a little while now and I know it’s helped me to look at what I am eating and consider if it’s helping me reach my goal. We all still have a Weekly SmartPoints Allowance. But our weekly points have gotten smarter, too. They now take into account our age, height, weight and gender – just like our Daily SmartPoints Target! Have more questions about SmartPoints? Jot them down and bring them to our meeting this week!

Last Week:  Say Ahh…

Stress…AGH! It happens. We all have it. And dealing with stress by way of noshing on as much food as we can only adds to our stress. So we talked about ways to de-stress without food. Did you try a breathing technique found in the Weekly? If so, which one? Why was it helpful? If not, what’s holding you back? I can’t wait to hear about ways you’ve found to release the stress and say “Ahhhh…”

This Week:  Coming Up: Walk it Out

When the air is fresh and the weather is warm, boy oh boy does a walk feel good! Not just physically, but mentally, too. Walking is one of the most popular forms of exercise and for good reason. It’s gentle on your body, improves your mood and health, and even supports weight loss.* But sometimes it’s hard to make it happen. Join us this week as we discuss why we love to walk and ways to make sure it’s on our schedule!

Skill Builder:

Have you checked out Connect? It’s our members-only social media site within the Weight Watchers app and on the website. You can celebrate, share tips and get inspired with other Weight Watchers members.

On Connect you can post photos of that fantastically low in SP, but massive breakfast. You can see success stories and tips. You can follow people you want to keep up with and use hashtags (#) to connect posts with a common theme.

How to access it:

Mobile App- simply tap the icon at the bottom titled “Connect.”

Website- click on “Connect” at the top of the page.

From the mobile app, you can access all of the features. Currently, you can only view, like and comment on others’ posts online. You can’t create your own post on the website at this time.

Common things to do on Connect:

  • comment on posts – click the “comment bubble” on a post>the keyboard appears> begin typing
  • “like” other members’ posts – click the heart shape on a post
  • view other members’ public profiles – click on the member’s name to view his/her profile and all the posts from that member (if public)
  • “tag” other members to send a notification to view a post – click the “comment bubble”>keyboard appears> then enter the “@” symbol, followed by a user name
  • report inappropriate post or block another member’s posts from your feed – tap the 3 dots at the bottom of a post> a menu appears with choices of “block user” or “report as inappropriate”

What about Profiles?

Profile Privacy: There are two types of profiles on Connect – Public or Private.

If your account is Public, this means that your posts are visible to other WW members without specifically approving the other user as a follower. Other members can follow a public profile without needing approval.

If your account is Private, this means that your posts ARE NOT visible to other WW members without specifically approving the requesting user. Other members can request to follow a private member. The requesting user will not see any of your posts until they are approved by  you.

Age, gender, weight, and other personal information are always private.

That’s great, but how do I change my setting to be Public or Private? I’m glad you asked! There are 2 ways:

1) The first time you create a post, you are able to select your Privacy Setting. A message will appear telling you that your posts are public and you will have to select “Great! Keep my posts public” or “No thanks, keep my posts private.”

2)    Do the following:

a) Click on Profile icon from either My Day OR Connect Screen to reach Profile page.

b) From Profile page, click “pencil” icon to reach Edit Profile page.

c) On Edit Profile page, click Privacy Settings to choose Private or Public
Have questions about Connect? Bring them to our meeting.

Also in regard to all the recipes, I have removed every reference to PointsPlus on this website since we now have SMARTPOINTS!!  So, if you would like to make any of the recipes, you will need to use recipe builder or figure out the SmartPoints.

Remember in your meeting rooms:  BRAVO!  This is the year for the “Bravo!”  I want everyone to look for moments of Bravos!!  When I looked Bravo up in the dictionary:  applause, cheers, well said, well done, good skillful, capable, clever, obedient, well behaved.  Aren’t these all words we can use when someone has been successful in a week!  So, when we are in the meeting rooms, please look for these opportunities and state:  that is a Bravo moment!!

ATTENTION WEIGHT WATCHERS FOOD WARRIORS: Go out and find your low SmartPoints food items and bring back to your meeting room to share with everyone!  If you have a recent food, gadget, etc that you feel the rest of the meeting would benefit from, please bring to your meeting.  I will let you share with the group!

Last year you probably realized that at the beginning of each meeting, I would ask about the previous week.  Weight Watchers and other researchers have learned that following up on a commitment and troubleshooting the challenges and what went right/wrong is the key to lasting change and getting to our goals!  So, each week at the end of each meeting, you will think about, write down, take a picture (whatever you would like to do) to remember the small change you would like to work on for the week.  Then, the following week, we will reflect back and recognize what we learned and then move forward.  This is the way anyone is successful in anything they do.  May it be running a long distance run to practicing the piano or doing a plain ol’ math problem.  Practice makes perfect!!!  I developed this cheat sheet below to explain this.  It makes such total sense!

LONG TERM WEIGHT-LOSS SUCCESS AND LONG TERM BEHAVIOR CHANGE

Commit to small goals each week

  • Motivation
  • Momentum
  • Allows us to practice behaviors to develop/maintain
  • However, Commit is only part of the solution

Follow-Up each week:

  • How things went week before
  • Discuss what worked
  • What didn’t work

Problem-solving (troubleshooting)

  • How could it go better next time

This leads to LONG TERM WEIGHT-LOSS SUCCESS and LIFETIME!

These results were published from a study conducted by Baylor College of Medicine.  This was published in the American Journal of Medicine, the number of ways members access Weight Watchers matters.

Members who accessed Weight Watchers through meetings, mobile apps and online tools:

  • Lost more weight (19 lbs in 6 months) than members who used one (9.3 lbs) or two (9.5 lbs) of these ways
  • Were more likely to feel satisfied with the program and with their own weight loss (regardless of how many pounds they actually lost) than members who used one or two of these tools
  • Kept coming to meetings longer than members who used one or two of these tools
  • Were more likely to encourage others to join than members who used one or two of these tools

So the end result of this is to stay for your meetings and use the on-line tools.  The tools used the most:  eTools (84% of members), the Barcode Scanner app (61%), and the WW Mobile app for iPhone (51%). Members who use these tools report high levels of satisfaction and tend to use them daily. Example: Out of all the members who use the WW Mobile app for the iPhone, 73% are “very satisfied” or “extremely satisfied” and 72% use it every day.  So have some fun, log on!!

We know there is no replacement for the meeting room experience.  This is why Weight Watchers works.  You have heard my story where I share that I joined a total of 8 times and for the first 7 times (in a 10 year period), I never once stayed for a meeting.  I couldn’t sit in that chair and admit I was out of control.  No, not me.  I could do on my own and be in control.  Well, guess what!  That didn’t work!  So, the 8th time, I stayed for every single meeting and lost the 47 pounds!  So, meetings do work.  But, there are times where every bit of information and an extra dose of support are valuable and can help us.

Tune into the Weight Watchers YouTube channel.  Fun information!  Click here.

During our meeting several weeks ago we spoke about the levels of change, we focused on how our environment can change and ultimately, change our behavior.  A member shared this awesome interview talking about just that.  It happens to be Brian Wansink.  If you remember he was in a couple of our videos we have seen in recent months in the meeting room regarding Mindless Eating.

Okay, everyone, this is coming from my heart.  I have just sat hear watching a video from the holiday WW headquarters town hall.  It is about a member named Jennie, who now works for WW.  I have been sitting here watching Part 1 and Part 2 and just crying and the emotions I am feeling are just overwhelming.  It has confirmed that I am doing the job I need to be doing.  You need to watch this YouTube video.  She weighed 440 pounds and lost over 300 pounds and is 54 years old.  It took her 2 years and 4 months.  I can’t tell you how this video will inspire you.  When you are down and out, watch Jennie.  Some of her thoughts, you need to listen for:

“Scared to miss a meeting”

“Never go back”

“I didn’t have a life, but WW gave me a life”

One of her thoughts was her skin has stopped from suffocating her to being a fan!

She now walks 4.5 miles per hour and at a 15 incline!!!!!!!!!!!

“Follow the directions”

Click here to hear Part 1:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BefRC2CPocY

Click here to hear Part 2:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTjjZDwxae4

I have to thank Jennie for her inspiration!  I need to write her a note!

Also, I ran across this You Tube site developed by Weight Watchers with some unbelievable inspiring stories.  This is so much better than just the Facebook, Twitter, etc since it is a video you watch of the person.  The above story of Jennie came from this site.  Click here to pick whatever inspiration story you want to see and hear.

Ok, so I have to make you laugh this week!  Each day during the month of December our Christmas tree would shake.  Well, Chloe decided she had to brush up on her tree climbing skills.  So, the last day when I took all the ornaments off, I turned around and she got almost to the top of the tree.  Here are a pictures of the feline!

Several questions have come up regarding the pages on my website and the dates showing January 17, for example.  Yes, the data has been updated since that date.  But, it is “hard-coded” within the software package, and I am not able to change this date.  The only date that will change will be the date on the main home page.  This will always reflect the Sunday of the current week.

Below is a picture of the staff of the Lenexa center and the number of pounds in food, we have lost:  1400 pounds which will be donated to Harvesters.

What a great event and turnout for the Walk-It Challenge.  Carol and I sponsored our walk at Shawnee Mission Park on Saturday, May 21.  We had approximately 105-110 participants. It was beautiful day with bright sunshine, a little windy but the lake was beautiful.  The WW Challenge 5K walk was on Sunday, May 22.  What an awesome event!  We had over 1000 participants!  It was so inspirational and loved to see everybody get out and bring friends, family, and we got to share a lot of stories. Great music, food and friends Thanks for everyone who attended.  Hope you had as much fun as we did!

We will be seeing less of you next week!
